AKF THE EUROPEAN UNION - RAPID RESPONSE FUNDS.
Dream Achievers Youth Organization (DAYO) with funding from The Aga Khan Foundation-Kenya (AKF-K) is implementing Strengthening Community Coping Strategies to the Covid-19 Pandemic under the The European Union - Rapid Response Fund in Mombasa for the next Six (6) Months 1st February 2022 to 31st July 2022.
AKF Project Focus
At a grassroots level, AKF is working with Civil Society Organizations (CSOs) to strengthen communities’ ability to prevent and respond to COVID-19. This includes identifying and prioritizing community needs, providing rapid response funds to CSOs to meet emerging needs, and disseminating messaging on prevention and protection to vulnerable groups. The CSOs are also encouraged to share stories of hope that promote solidarity during these difficult times within their communities
DAYO Proposed Project Activities will be implemented under the two main objectives as aforementioned i.e.
• Increasing access to livelihood opportunities for youth in Mombasa through entrepreneurship support.
• Understanding the current Covid19 situation with a view of developing responsive interventions in collaborative with all relevant stakeholders.
Objective 1: To increase access to livelihood opportunities for youth in Mombasa through entrepreneurship support.
1. Inception meeting for youth mobilizes: The project will organize a stakeholders meeting to share ideas and objectives of the project. This is also meant to secure stakeholder buy-in.
2. Surveying and mapping of youth groups: The project will map Youth groups which consist of youth entrepreneurs and leaders within the county to come up with a database with the support of chiefs ward administrators and Ministry of Youth. This is aimed at both building individual and institutional capacity, memory and also facilitates knowledge management
3. Information meeting: DAYO will organize an information meeting with the identified youth groups to vet and profile them as well as task them with mobilizing members to participate in the project. The mobilization of the youth will be done with the assistance of gate keepers e.g. chiefs and elders.
4. Youth mobilization for training: DAYO after cleaning and vetting the database will support the business service provider by mobilizing the youth for trainings. Each group leader will be tasked with train and mentor 10 peers within their group to trickle down the knowledge and skills acquired in the trainings.
5. Post training follow ups and support: The project will adopt a post-training peer-engagement model, where the trained (160) youth will be required to pass the training content to their peers in the various groups.
Objective 2: To identify COVID 19 emerging needs and the extent of the needs by conducting a rapid needs analysis, and resource mapping to better understand the different needs, priorities, and resources available for the identified needs:
I. Covid19 Rapid Needs Assessment
The project will under this objective seek to establish the current needs occasioned by the existing Covid19 situation where DAYO will undertake a Rapid Needs Assessment where both primary and secondary data will be collected and analyzed to reveal the different needs, priorities and resources required/available to address these needs.
The primary data will be collected during the process of ideating with various stakeholders which will take place at a three day stakeholders’ forum. The secondary data on the other hand will be collected through literature review where the consultant will review various literatures which include various County and Project documents. These sets of data will be analyzed and triangulated to derive findings which will help identify COVID 19 emerging needs and the extent of the needs, from which the consultant will compile a Rapid Needs Assessment Report, complete with recommended action plans.
The findings of the Rapid Needs Assessment will be shared on another forum where stakeholders will be mobilized to participate in the validation process of the report findings and recommended actions.
II. Ideate with key stakeholders to identify the priority and appropriate interventions
The project will under this objective mobilize relevant stakeholders with a view to seek their voice on the emerging needs and the extent of the needs as well as suggest and prioritize appropriate interventions that will respond to these needs. This forum will be a three day workshop organized in Mombasa and facilitated by DAYO. The ideas collected from this forum will also form part of the data that will be analyzed during the Rapid Needs Assessment.
III. Review various county and project documents to design appropriate methodology to undertake the interventions
DAYO will review various county and project documents. The literature review process will be used to collect secondary data for the Rapid Needs Assessment as well as used to guide the process of designing appropriate methodology to undertake the recommended interventions.
IV. To develop messages based on the identified needs and disseminate them on to highlight the significance of prevention and protection of members of vulnerable communities
The project will use the findings of the Rapid Needs Assessment and recommendations as well as other relevant information to develop messages based on the identified needs and disseminate them on to highlight the significance of prevention and protection of members of vulnerable communities. This process will involve developing of Covid19 information material; packaging of the messages into various media that include electronic (videos and sound bites) and print (flyers, information booklets, posters, graffiti, murals); and disseminating the messaging materials to target various audiences.
V. Distributions of livelihood care package to vulnerable Community.
The project also aims at mapping out, identifying households that were adversely impacted by the Covid-19 pandemic and distributing livelihood care package to the 550 households within Mombasa. This will be aided by the development of a selection criterion to ensure that the distribution of the package is on merit basis.
VI. Providing seed capital to vulnerable community to start small business.
The project will also develop an identification criterion, to help identify 50 vulnerable young women from the community whose businesses were adversely impacted and support them with seed capital to start/boost for small and micro enterprises to help ensure sustained sources of livelihoods.
